Lilli,

I'm a type one, a (self-diagnosed)celiac and I'm a weight watcher. Its the only way I know how to lose weight. I was having a really hard time losing weight but until you realize how incredibly more caloric GF food is its seems like no wonder that we gain weight! Our bodies are absorbing calories regularly again and because GF food is more caloric eating the same amount of food as before chalks up more than before. I'm having a hard time finding fiber-rich foods that are GF. It's very frustrating, but it's worth it I guess when you're proud of your body.

Good luck!

Wow, there are days that I thought I was the ONLY one who suffered from both Type 1 diabetes, and Celiac Disease. I never felt hindered by my diabetes...but Celiac Disease has just thrown me for a loop. I was also 12 when I was diagnosed with diabetes, and for a while, especially while pregnant etc., it bothered me. But this... this is just terrible. It's been 17 months since my diagnosis, and I feel like I'm still grieving a death...I guess its because I am the cook for my family, and also because I am one of the asymptomatic celiacs.
But now, I face another challenge. I've gained 20lbs since my diagnosis (despite exercising regularly). Those were 20lbs that were hard to lose before, now are IMPOSSIBLE to lose. Any suggestions? I'm at the point where I want to ditch this gluten free diet, and go back to my "healthy" diet of fiber rich grains, etc. And I know all about quinoa and the alternatives... Sometimes, I'd like to just to go out and order a turkey sandwich!! Thanks for letting me sound off.....

So glad to hear you be so strong with the combination of celiac and diabetes. I find that it is a whole new learning curve for my patients as well. One thing I encourage it using more whole grain flours like Amaranth, Quinoa and Teff so the carbs are more complex and digestion slows.
Thanks for keeping the connection complete.
GF Momma

Ah, diabetes and celiac -- the killer combo! I too live with them. Nice to see somebody else talking about the connection on the web. I had to find out the hard way :(
