Gluten-Free Review of the GF Brownies and Chocolate Cake Mix from Betty Crocker

Gluten-Free Brownies Mix from Betty Crocker

Round three of my Becky Crocker Gluten-Free Mix reviews includes a winner and a loser.  The gluten-free brownie mix gets a BIG thumbs up. The gluten-free Devils Food Cake Mix, um, not so much.

So after purchasing six-packs from Amazon.com for the Gluten-Free Yellow Cake Mix and the Gluten-Free Chocolate Chip Cookie Mix from Betty Crocker, I received a sample pack from MyBlogSpark with all of the varieties.  I had an invite to a dinner party last week and used that opportunity to get a broader group of gluten-gluttons to taste the brownies and chocolate cupcakes.

Better Crocker Gluten-Free Devils Food Cake Mix

Just from my tasting before the dinner party, I knew the Devil’s Food cupcake were not up to muster.  I tried smothering them in frosting (since at its best a cupcake is merely a frosting delivery device), but it wasn’t sufficient.  I would expect a Devil’s Food Cake to be extra chocolate-y but I might have mistaken this for a banana muffin if you didn’t tell me it was chocolate beforehand.

Betty Crocker Gluten-Free Brownies Mix Review

The brownies on the other hand – I had a difficult time restraining myself to ensure there would be enough for everyone at the dinner party.  My tastes proved to be a harbinger of the broader response.  The gluten-free brownies were eagerly devoured, leaving only crumbs next to the hardly-touched Devils Food cupcakes.  Luckily it seems that Kerrie at GF Shaolin has found a way to make the gluten-free Devils Food mix more palatable – since I know the Yellow Cake Mix can be salvaged, I may have to give the chocolate mix another chance.  Though, anyone looking for gluten-free chocolate overload really needs to try my Flourless Chocolate Lust Cake.

Now comes the good part – the giveaway – one lucky reader will receive a Betty Crocker “Sweet Moments” prize pack that includes all four gluten-free mixes, and two free coupons for any of the varieties.

Since Betty Crocker seems to be listening to the gluten-free blogs, let’s give them an idea of what we want to see next.  To be eligible for the gluten-free prize pack, leave a comment with your wish-list of gluten-free mixes/products.  What else would you like to see Betty Crocker make for the gluten-free community?  You must be a U.S. resident to be eligible, so post your comment before 9pm Eastern on Tuesday, August 4, 2009 to be part of the drawing.

Extra good news – even if you don’t win this prize pack – Betty Crocker is giving away free coupons for the gluten-free mixes – just call 1-800-446-1898 to request yours (one coupon per household).

I would love to see a lemon cake, blueberry muffin, cinnamon coffeecake mix, angel food mix, cereal bars, and of course more cereal! I am so glad to see what they are doing though! They make being a celiac so much easier!

I would love to see some kind of muffin or pancake mix! I make a lot of this stuff from scratch, but in a pinch, it is nice to have a mix. :)

We had good results with the Devil’s Food Cake, but I have heard others have not as well.

I would love to see pie crust mix, vanilla-flavoured cookies, pecan nut cookies, different granola flavours, and healthy snacks.

And why not expand the brand and start selling it in Sweden? I’m from Sweden (I recently moved to USA) and when I get back there I’m going to miss Betty Crocker!

I agree about the brownies, they were AMAZING. They tasted like brownies… every other gluten free brownie I’ve ever had tasted horrible.

A cinnamon coffeecake mix sounds amazing, I’ve love some muffin mixes. Back when I could eat gluten i would make batches and freeze them, then the night before I’d defrost them for a quick breakfast.

I would love to see peanut butter cookies, a sponge cake, oatmeal cookies, and maybe a lemon poppyseed muffin mix. Very exciting how much I’m hearing about what all Betty Crocker is doing.

Coffeecake and muffin mix. I haven’t found any mixes for those I like. Breakfast always seems to be a gluten event at my house and hubby can’t eat it. Desserts are easier because there are many alternatives to gluten laden desserts.

I’d like to see blueberry muffins and some snack bars…maybe it’s just because it’s lunch time, but I am really craving one of those brownies!

True confession: I’d love to see a “confetti” cake. Flashes from childhood – those sicky-sweet artificially colored dots in the light fluffy cake. MMmmm.

I liked the devils food! I don’t usually like things super chocolatey though, so maybe that’s why I like them!

I would LOVE to see them make an Angel’s Food Cake Mix!!!

I would love to see a quick coffee cake mix, German chocolate cake, cereals, pancakes, easy frostings, angel food cake, breadsticks,or to make matters simpler how about a quick all-purpose flour mix like Bisquick for us gluten-free eaters.

I’ve got high hopes for these Betty Crocker mixes! Maybe they’ll stir up some much-needed awareness.

Tried the Devil’s Food Cake mix, and “meh”. I agree that it was kind of bland, but my biggest complaint was that it didn’t rise at all. I filled the cake tin only half way, thinking it would expand, but instead I got a cake that only filled half the pan.

My favorite mix would have to be the Gluten-Free Pantry’s Decadent Chocolate Cake mix. The name is no lie. The Betty Crocker mix pales in comparison.

I’m not sure what they have already since I’m new to gluten-free baking, but I would love a banana bread mix, maybe cinnamon rolls, and a pie crust.

Ideally, I’d love to see a gf counterpart for every Betty Crocker product out on the shelves. I know that’s not reasonable, however, so I’d really like to see a good cornbread and muffin mix. And what about giving us a GF equivalent of the individual Warm Delights and Warm Delights minis—they would be perfect for us to take on trips etc—-only need a microwave.

Great blog, Cat! I bought the Betty Crocker chocolate chip cookie, yellow cake, and brownie mixes last week. So far, we’ve only tried the chocolate chip cookies with some added chocolate chips. We thought they were pretty good, and I’m excited to try them again with oatmeal! Never thought to do that…great suggestion! My son misses “white cake” (although he just licks the icing off the top, so I don’t know why it matters)…I’ll definitely try your fixes when we make the yellow cake mix. Probably won’t try the Devil’s Food mix after your review. We love Pamela’s chocolate cake mix…maybe the best chocolate cupcakes we’ve ever had! Pamela’s brownies are also delish, but I’m eager to try the Betty Crocker mix now. I always add about a bag of chocolate chips to any brownie mix…makes it even more delish!

I would love to see a pie crust (similar to a graham cracker crust to make homemade cheesecake.)I miss blueberry muffins! The freezer kind seems so expensive and fattening. :) A pancake mix out of the box would be great. I make banana bread and muffins from scratch, but out of the box would also be great.

Thanks for posting this giveaway!

My husband is celiac but also allergic to chocolate. So in addition to the yellow cake mix I would absolutely love to see:
– Gluten free coffee cake mix
– Gluten free (apple) muffin/bread mix

Thank you!

I have only tried the brownies and I actually felt they got better the next day! I would love to see Betty Crocker make a gingerbread cookie mix or maybe a great biscuit mix.

I would love to try the other Betty Crocker mixes!

Pizza crust and muffins would be awesome. Can you tell me what that interesting pan is in the picture? And where did you get it? I’m new to GF, spent 3 hours reading labels yesterday and only found a handful of things in our local small town stores.

Just bought the yellow cake and cookie mix yesterday @ a local grocery store so I was excited that I did not have to go to a health food store to find it. Cannot wait to try them after reading the reviews!!
Though I would like to see a pancake or waffle mix and a pizza crust would make my life so much more simplier.

My daughter-in-law got the Gluten Free Brownies from Betty Crocker for a family BBQ, knowing that I have celiac and haven’t been able to have dessert with everyone else on these occasions. They were great, even my son (her husband) who is very picky loved them. Lemon Bars would be my request for future mixes. Way to go. Now if I could only find them at my local stores.

I love these. I tried the Devil’s Food and it was comparable to the Bob’s Red Mill that I had been buying, but a lot less expensive. The great thing is that not only are they Gluten Free but the mixes are dairy free. We made ours with Earth Balance and Rice Milk and they came out perfect. They need to advertise that they are also dairy free. I would love to see muffins and bread mixes as well as peanut butter cookies.

Thanks

Excited to get these in my super market. I purchased the chocolate chip cookies and added a Tbsp. of plain greek yogurt for chewiness. They turned out good. If you rest the dough in the frig. before baking for a 1/2 hr. they held their shape better. I would love to see a sugar cookie mix. Since there is a lot of ways to use this mix. A coffee cake mix and pancake/waffle mix would be great.

I made the Betty Crocker Chocolate Cake-Gluten Free and LOVED it…I am surprised that others did not…my family even liked it and they never like my GF desserts….

I wasn’t a huge fan of the Chocolate cake mix either, I found it to be too dry. So I tried your recipe that you gave for the yellow cake mix and it worked out really well. I made it again but decided I didn’t want the orange flavor & I substituted Coconut Milk & it was fantastic! The cake was super moist. Even my family that avoids gluten free anything loved it :)
